England captain Wayne Rooney opened his Premier League account for the season to help Manchester United move top of the table with victory over Sunderland.

The 29-year-old, who this month became England’s all-time highest ever goal-scorer, had endured a slow start to the season in front of goal at Old Trafford.

However, he scored after the break to help ensure the Red Devils capitalised on another Manchester City slip-up to move to the Premier League summit with a 3-0 win.

Rooney’s strike arrived just a couple of hours after Harry Kane netted his first Tottenham goal of the campaign in a 4-1 win over City.

Kane, who scored for England against both San Marino and Switzerland earlier this month, reached 12 hours of action without a Spurs goal as they went behind at White Hart Lane.

However, Eric Dier fired in an equaliser from distance on the stroke of half-time and Kane added one of three second-half Tottenham goals as they cruised to victory.

Daniel Sturridge marked his first start of the season with a double as Liverpool edged a five-goal thriller with Aston Villa at Anfield.

James Milner got the hosts off to a flying start and while they were made to work hard for the points, Sturridge – who underwent hip surgery in May – struck twice to ensure Villa went home empty-handed.

In-form striker Jamie Vardy netted twice but it could not prevent Leicester City slipping to a 5-2 defeat at home to Arsenal, who had Theo Walcott among the scorers.

Meanwhile, England Under-21s winger Nathan Redmond thought he had won it for Norwich when his goal put them ahead against West Ham inside the final ten minutes, but the Canaries had to settle for a 2-2 draw.

Away from the top-flight, teenager Karlan Ahearne-Grant came off the bench to score his maiden league goal for Charlton, while Norwich loanee Josh Murphy found the net for MK Dons in defeat to Derby.

And goalkeeper Jordan Pickford produced a man-of-the-match performance to earn Preston North End a point against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
