England striker Harry Kane returned to goalscoring form with a hat-trick as Tottenham Hotspur came from behind to secure a 5-1 win at Bournemouth.

They fell behind inside a minute as Matt Ritchie fired in from 12 yards, but Kane levelled from the penalty spot after being fouled by Cherries keeper Artur Boruc.

Mousa Dembele then side-footed the visitors ahead before Erik Lamela tapped in a third before the break.

After the restart Kane grabbed his second when he slid in Christian Eriksen’s cross before he pounced on a goalkeeping error to seal his treble and the matchball.

“I never had any doubts about Harry, but it was very important hat-trick,” said Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino after the game after Kane had taken his season's tally to four.

“It’s important for him to learn from a period of not scoring so regularly. It happens in football. I’m happy because he’ll become a much better player after such a tough run.”

Mauricio Pochettino's side, which included Kyle Walker, Danny Rose, Eric Dier and Dele Alli in the starting line-up, remain unbeaten in the league since the opening day of the campaign as they moved up to sixth in the table.

Three Lions skipper Wayne Rooney was unable to grab a goal on his birthday weekend as his Manchester United side were held to a goalless draw at home to local rivals City.

Phil Jones and Chris Smalling were the two other England internationals within the Red Devils starting eleven, with goalkeeper Joe Hart and attacker Raheem Sterling in action for the Citizens.

In the final Premier League clash of the weekend, Liverpool were held 1-1 at home by a late Southampton equaliser.

England duo Daniel Sturridge and Jordan Henderson may well still be injured, but Nathaniel Clyne, Adam Lallana and James Milner all started for Jurgen Klopp’s side – and it was Milner who had the biggest impact.

The 29-year-old whipped in an inch perfect ball for Christian Benteke to power Liverpool in front with a header, only for Sadio Mané to equalise with five minutes remaining.

Elsewhere, Under-19s goalkeeper Freddie Woodman was an unused substitute as his Newcastle United team-mates were defeated 3-0 at neighbours Sunderland.
