Doncaster edge Barnsley in FA Youth Cup first round

Thursday 22 Oct 2015
Doncaster Rovers are through to the second round

Doncaster were forced to do it the hard way as they dumped Barnsley out of the FA Youth Cup first round thanks to an extra time winner from Michael Carberry.

Doncaster took an early lead in their clash against Barnsley as Kevin Mbuti bundled the ball over the line on 36 minutes after the visitors failed to clear a routine free-kick.

Barnsley levelled on 54 minutes as Jack Alton’s free-kick into the box was headed home by Logan Jeffs as the Reds deservedly capitalised on their pressure.

Jack Walton produced a stunning save on 69 minutes at point blank range to deny Doncaster a late winner, while Barnsley had the ball in the net on 89 minutes through Jeffs but the goal was disallowed.

In extra time, Rovers secured their progress to the next round as Carberry found space at the back post to fire home his side’s second of the game just four minutes from time.

Elsewhere, Basford United hammered FC Halifax Town 4-1 in their third qualifying round tie as they produced a hugely impressive showing.

Harry Wakefield put Basford ahead early on but just three minutes before the interval Jack Johnson levelled for the visitors.

Calum Smith restored Basford’s lead on 67 minutes, with Kirmani Smith adding a third just two minutes later.

Third round qualifying results

Basford United 4-1 Halifax Town
Hayes & Yeading United 4-1 St Albans City

Dulwich Hamlet 3-1 Bromley

And with just five minutes left to play, Smith won a late penalty for Basford, which was converted by Myron Duffy for his side’s fourth of the game.

Meanwhile, Dulwich Hamlet survived a late scare as they disposed of Bromley 2-1 to progress in their third qualifying round tie.

Reece Johnson put Dulwich ahead after only three minutes, with Osman Proni adding a second on 71. Daniel Ajakayie pulled a late goal back for Bromley to set up a nervous finale but it proved too little too late.

In the evening’s remaining third qualifying round ties, Hayes & Yeading comfortably beat St Albans 4-1, with Lincoln City scored an 88th minute winner to dump Oadby Town out of the competition 3-2.
