Stoke City’s Ryan Shawcross says he has not given up on his ambition of playing for England in the future.

The defender earned his first and only Three Lions cap so far against Sweden in November 2012 after previously being named in a number of squads by Roy Hodgson that year.

But he has not been involved since that trip to Gothenburg, which is remembered more for the four-goal haul from Sweden’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic in their 4-2 victory than for the six England debutants on show and the game being Steven Gerrard's 100th for the Three Lions.

The 27-year-old has been in good form for Mark Hughes’ side over the last two terms though and hopes he is in with a shout of a recall.

"I feel like I'm playing well enough to get in the squad, but unfortunately I've not been picked," he said in an interview with Sky Sports.

"There are a lot of good centre-halves out there so it's going to be difficult, but all I can do is my stuff on the pitch."

The former Manchester United player has been a regular for Stoke during their seven seasons in the Premier League, making nearly 300 appearances.

And as Hughes’ side aim to finish in their highest Premier League position yet, Shawcross knows he has to keep faith in his own performances.

"Hopefully if I play well enough, I'll get back in that squad," he added.

"And if not, then I've tried my hardest and hopefully played well."
