Danny Ings celebrates his winner but it wasn't enough for Burnley

Danny Ings got his name back on the Burnley scoresheet to earn three points away to Hull City - but it was not enough to avoid relegation to the Championship.

The England Under-21s striker smashed home a half-volley 30 minutes from time to net his first since February and take his haul for the season to double figures.

While Ings, who is looking to be in Gareth Southgate's squad for this summer's European Championship in Czech Republic, may have been scoring, Jack Butland - another hoping to be on the plane to the Euros next month - was keeping them out at the Britannia Stadium.

The Stoke City stopper kept a clean sheet as the Potters beat Tottenham Hotspur 3-0 to move up to ninth in the Premier League.

Elsewhere, Roy Hodgson was in the stands at the King Power Stadium to view some of the Three Lions defenders as Leicester City saw off Southampton.

Hodgson was able to run the rule over full-backs Ryan Bertrand and Nathaniel Clyne, while the England boss also caught a glimpse of Under-20s midfielder Harrison Reed.

The 20-year-old is the latest academy product to break into the Saints first-team, making his ninth Premier League appearance of the season in the 2-0 defeat to Leicester.

Ashley Young was the provider for Manchester United in their 2-1 win at Crystal Palace. He had a hand in both goals - a penalty from Juan Mata and a Marouane Fellaini header - as the Old Trafford outfit edged closer to a return to the Champions League.

“I still think I've got a lot to offer.”

However, it was not all plain-sailing for Louis van Gaal's men as United suffered injuries to both full-back Luke Shaw and England skipper Wayne Rooney, which led to the pair being substituted.

The Dutchman suggested after that both injuries were not serious, though: "Shaw took an elbow and had a bloody nose, but he went to the hospital and I have already heard that he shall fly home with us," said the United boss. "I don’t think it is very bad, out of precaution we took him off.

"Rooney had a dead leg so next week he is healthy and fit to play.”

On-loan United midfielder Tom Cleverley continued his claims for an England recall with his third goal in as many matches.

Prior to his scoring spree the midfielder had not found the net in 37 appearances, but his strike against West Ham helped Aston Villa to a priceless victory in their bid for survival.

Cleverley scored the game’s only goal in the first-half after Jack Grealish had cut the ball back to him.

In the day’s early game Jermain Defoe also put his name forward for a return to the England setup.

The 32-year-old said back in January that he was hungry to keep playing for his country after joining Sunderland from Toronto.

Defoe said: “I still think I've got a lot to offer. I still feel sharp. I've always worked hard and I still feel like I've got a lot of goals left in me.”

And the striker did his chances no harm by notching the second in Sunderland’s 2-0 victory at Everton.

The former Tottenham man was in the right place at the right time, deflecting Adam Johnson’s cross-shot into the back of the net.
