Campfield book place in FA Sunday Cup Final

Mick Santangeli (R) and Dominic Blair (L) battle for the ball

Campfield FC moved into the FA Sunday Cup Final for the first time as they beat Chapeltown Fforde Grene 2-1 in an entertaining game at Marine FC’s Arriva Stadium.

It was Chapeltown who edged the first half, creating by far the better chances, but the brilliance of Ryan Jones in the Campfield goal kept his side in it.

Daniel Sherriff showed superb technique to chest the ball down and volley it towards the top corner early on, but Jones, who impressed throughout, made a magnificent one-handed save to keep the scores level.

He then made a superb double save to keep out Joel Hughes and the dangerous Sherriff as Chapeltown began to dominate the game, but Jones dealt with everything thrown at him and it was goalless at half time.

The Yorkshire club, the only side left in the competition to have made it this far before, began the second half brightly.

The impressive Eder Ruiz’s turn-and-strike brought out another superb save from Jones.

They soon went ahead when Chris Hitching tapped home from close range after a corner caused all sorts of confusion inside the Campfield area.

It was richly deserved given the chances Chapeltown had created.

The Final will take place on Sunday 26 April

However, Campfield suddenly burst into life midway through the second half when Steven Jones’ effort skimmed the top of the crossbar.

Moments later he volleyed wide of the post from a good position.

Those were warning signs for Chapeltown, who looked vulnerable for the first time in the match.

Campfield were level with 15 minutes left when Mick Williams’ pinpoint cross found Matty Williams inside the box.

His powerful downward header beat Suruwa Bojang, and moments later, Jones put Campfield ahead with a first-time strike after great work from Matty Willams.

Ryan Cox nearly sealed it but his cute lob hit the top of the crossbar, with Campfield buoyed by their quick double and well in the ascendency, and they hung on for a famous victory.
