England Women’s captain Steph Houghton says her side have the potential to go all the way at the World Cup.

Mark Sampson’s Lionesses squad get their Canada 2015 campaign under way against France, arguably the most in-form nation in the women's game, in Moncton on Tuesday afternoon.

England qualified unbeaten for the tournament and are ranked sixth in the world.

Houghton said: "We can't come to a tournament and not believe.

"We know that we've prepared fully and worked hard and we believe and trust in the game plan the manager's given us. If we stay together there's no doubt we've got some players that have got world-class ability and it's all about performance.

"As a captain of this side, I fully believe we have the players to potentially go all the way.

"We know we have some world-class opposition to face and we've got to concentrate on one game at a time and that [starts against] France tomorrow, who are a team we have to respect.

"They've been at the top of their game for the last three or four years."

England sealed their place at the World Cup with a 4-0 win over Wales in August last year – and they have been preparing for the tournament ever since, with matches against Germany, USA and four in the Cyprus Cup.

They enjoyed a 10-day training camp in Toronto, culminating in one final warm-up match against the host nation, before flying to Moncton, the venue for their first two matches in Group F, on Friday.

And Houghton says her team-mates are thriving on the excitement of taking part in a major tournament rather than feeling under any pressure.

The 27-year-old added: "In terms of pressure at a World Cup, as soon as we arrived here it was all about excitement and counting down the days until our game. We've been working so hard to get here.

"That's what we have to keep thinking of - that we've worked so hard to get to this position, now we've got to go and enjoy every moment.

"We've spent the last 18 months preparing for this. Being part of a World Cup and representing your country is a great honour - we can't wait."

After the France match, England face Mexico on 13 June and Colombia on 17 June.
