Kate Longhurst believes Liverpool can have the better of Notts County on Saturday, despite having already suffered a defeat to them in The FA Women’s Super League with BT Sport this season.

The back-to-back WSL 1 champions lost by 1-0 at Meadow Lane in May, with Fern Whelan’s header deciding a close contest.

Just two points separate the pair in the table now, with Liverpool having beaten Arsenal 3-1 last weekend in front of the BT Sport cameras, while the Lady Pies slipped up at Sunderland.

And Longhurst, who has started five of Liverpool’s six FA WSL 1 games so far this term, believes the Reds can continue on their upward curve against the SSE Women's FA Cup Finalists.

"We played well against Notts County, we had two or three good chances and should have finished them," said the 26-year-old.

"If we approach the game the same way, but take our chances, then there is no reason why we shouldn’t win.

"They have very good players and are one of the best teams defensively in the League. I don’t think it is a great surprise to see them doing so well this season.

"They were a bit unlucky with injuries last season, but they look very together and have a strong work-rate, which goes a long way in women’s football.

"Jess Clarke is having a brilliant season and Ellen White and Rachel Williams give them a lot of strength going forward."

Meanwhile County defender Whelan, the aforementioned match-winner in the May meeting, echoes Longhurst’s sentiment that the result of the first game will count for little this weekend.

However, she hopes the England spine in the team, including new loan signing Siobhan Chamberlain from Arsenal, can make the difference.

"Lots of players from both teams will have been at the World Cup, and for us we definitely see that as a positive," said Whelan.

"It should be business as usual for them heading into the second half of the season.

"We did get three points against Liverpool just before the break but that was a massively tight game.

"They really pushed us to our limits and it was a very tough one to play in, as they posed as much of a threat to us as we did to them.

"It will be back to the drawing board for this game as we want three points again, but it’s not an easy task, especially playing at the home of the champions from the last two years."
