Chorley and FC United share six in FA Trophy thriller

Saturday 10 Jan 2015
The two sides will play again from a place in the Third Round

Chorley and FC United of Manchester contested arguably the match of the day in the FA Trophy Second Round with a thrilling 3-3 draw.

The 2,254 supporters inside Chorley's Victory Park stadium were treated to six goals but no victory for their side, as a thrilling deadlock was played out.

On 16 minutes the home side took the initiative when Paul Jarvis rifled a shot in at the near post, with help from a generous deflection.

And 21 minutes later the Magpies doubled their lead when James Dean smashed a stunning long-range effort into the visitors' goal.

FC United, a club that climbed through the football league after being established by disenfranchised Manchester United fans, then rose from the ashes of the match to pull one back.

Tome Greaves reduced the deficit 13 minutes after the interval in which his side had clearly enjoyed an inspiring team-talk.

The crowd was then treated to the fourth goal of the match when United completed their comeback. Greaves skipped down the flank, created space for himself and finished with aplomb.

With ten minutes remaining both sides had plenty of chances to secure progress into the Third Round at the first time of asking and neither backed down from the challenge.

But it was the Manchester side who took the lead for the first time when Matt Wolfenden scored to put his side in front with just eight minutes remaining.

However, despite working so hard to get ahead, United could not hold on and allowed a leveller in just two minutes after taking the lead.

Dean – a striker with a clear cause – grabbed his second goal of the match with a powerful header.

There were four minutes of added time but not enough for either side to snatch a decided.

Instead, they will play again on Tuesday night at Tameside Stadium.
