Torquay United manager Chris Hargreaves believes success in The FA Trophy would be a major boost to his club, and said "I would be lying if I didn't say I wanted to win the FA Trophy".

The Gulls have endured a difficult 12 months with the club suffering relegation from the Football League last season and struggling financially, but winning the FA Trophy would help divert attention away from all of this negativity.

Hargreaves' side come into this Saturday's Semi-Final second leg tie with an unexpectedly longer break from the first leg with their Tuesday night Conference Premier league match against Lincoln being called off due to a waterlogged pitch.

The Devon club lost the first leg at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground 2-1 with Ryan Bowman scoring the consolation goal, but Hargreaves believes this late goal has given the Gulls a chance.

Hargreaves said: "It was a crucial goal for us – there is no doubt about that – we had fewer chances in the game compared to Wrexham, but the timing of the goal we scored was important because we were then putting the pressure on them and it probably put a little bit of doubt in their minds.

“We want to get back in the Football League but this competition it gives us a chance to play at a wonderful stadium”

"They are in the driving seat coming into the second leg but we have given ourselves a chance by scoring that goal."

Torquay were runners-up in this competition in the 2008 where they lost 1-0 to Ebbsfleet United – but going one step further and winning it would be rewarding for the club and the fans.

"This would give the fans a little bit of success and glory in what has been a tough and turbulent 12 months at the club," said Hargreaves.

"We want to get back in the Football League but being in this competition it gives us a chance to play at a wonderful stadium and we want to do that – we want to reward all our fans for all their support."

"I would class this a really good opportunity for our club to get to Wembley and no one would be more delighted than me if we go there."
