Wayne Rooney and Michael Carrick saw action for Manchester United
Michael Carrick recovered from scoring an early own goal to provide an assist as Manchester United took a big step towards Champions League qualification with a 3-1 win over Club Brugge.

The Red Devils welcomed the Belgians to Old Trafford in the first leg of the showpiece competition’s final play-off, but they were stunned as Carrick deflected the ball into his own net on eight minutes to hand the opposition the lead.

Not to be deterred, the 34-year-old provided the pass for team-mate Memphis Depay to equalise before the Dutchman added a second before the break.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles in possession for England

Ainsley Maitland-Niles grabbed an assist for Ipswich

Three Lions defender Chris Smalling continued his good start to the season with another impressive performance as he kept the visitors at bay alongside Luke Shaw before their side added a third late on. Marouane Fellaini, who had replaced England and United skipper Wayne Rooney moments before, popped up in the dying seconds to seal a two-goal first leg advantage.

A number of England’s youth internationals were in action domestically in a busy schedule of Football League action.

Ainsley Maitland-Niles (U18s) provided an assist from a corner as Ipswich Town defeated Burnley 2-0 at Portman Road. The visitors lined up with Tom Heaton, who received his first senior call up in May, in goal.

Adam Armstrong on the ball

Adam Armstrong scored his fifth in three games for Coventry

Jamie Hanson (U20s) limped off after only 39 minutes as his Derby County side drew 1-1 with Stewart Downing's (Senior) Middlesbrough in the Championship.

Striker Sam Gallagher (U20s), on loan from Southampton, appeared as a second half sub for MK Dons in their 1-0 home win over Bolton, but Karlan Ahearne-Grant (U18s) could not inspire Charlton Athletic from the bench as they fought out a goalless draw at Nottingham Forest.

Adam Armstrong continued his incredible start to the season as he notched his fifth goal in just three games since joining Coventry City on loan from Newcastle United. The England Under-18s striker, who bagged eight in nine for his country last season, scored the second as the Sky Blues defeated Crewe 3-2 at the Ricoh Arena in League One. Last season's U19s captain Bryn Morris, on loan from Middlesbrough, appeared as a late sub for City.

Freddie Woodman kept a clean sheet on his Crawley Town debut

Freddie Woodman kept his first professional clean sheet for Crawley

Back in the Championship and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford (U20s) kept out Rotherham United as he helped Preston to a 0-0 draw and Freddie Woodman (U19s) kept the first clean sheet of his professional career down in League Two. The on loan Newcastle United shotstopper was in net for Crawley Town as they were held to a stalemate at home to AFC Wimbledon.

Another Young Lions goalkeeper in action was Christian Walton. The U20s international, on loan from Brighton, had a busy evening as his Bury side went down 4-3 at home to Fleetwood Town in League One.
