Ross Barkley’s goalscoring start to the campaign is down to a pre-season pep talk from Everton team-mate Romelu Lukaku.

The England international followed up his thunderous strike against Watford last week by scoring with a sublime effort on Saturday against Southampton.

The 21-year-old had earlier turned provider for the second of Lukaku’s two goals during the 3-0 win on the south coast, and the Belgian hitman believes a chat during the summer looks to be working wonders.

“I told him at the start of the season that he needs to score more and make more assists,” Lukaku told the Liverpool Echo.

Romelu Lukaku reveals his chat with Ross Barkley

“He is 21-years-old and nearly 22-years-old and he needs to be up there with the best players in the League because he has the qualities.”

Following the victory two days ago, Toffees boss Roberto Martinez hailed the efforts of his young midfielder.

“He’s quite unique,” Martinez said. “That intensity is an important part of the game but the bravery Ross Barkley has is he’ll show from any angle, he’ll get the ball, he’ll try to be positive, he’ll try to make things happen for the team.”

England manager Roy Hodgson was in attendance at St Mary's at he could include Barkley in his Three Lions squad for the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers against San Marino and Switzerland.
