England's Lewis Baker urges youngsters to go abroad

Former England Under-20s captain Lewis Baker believes more young players should follow his lead by heading overseas.

The Chelsea midfielder has joined Dutch club Vitesse Arnhem on a season-long loan, having spent similar spells in the Football League with MK Dons and Sheffield Wednesday in 2014-15.

And as he prepares to face Southampton in a Europa League qualifier on Thursday, Baker is bullish in his assessment of the lack of English players trying their luck abroad.

"I think a lot of the English boys maybe don't want to try coming out abroad for some reason," said the 20-year-old, who will be hoping to win a place in Gareth Southgate’s Under-21s squad in the forthcoming season.

"The first loan I did [Sheffield Wednesday], I didn't maybe want to go abroad, but seeing different cultures and different ways of playing I would advise [it] to young English players.

"I think if you go and try different places, you pick up different things and different styles of playing. It's just about experiences, I think.

"Maybe not staying in England can benefit you, maybe it can benefit you staying. It depends what you are comfortable with.

"I am living by myself in a town that's close, for me, I definitely think this is a good move."

Baker has been joined at the GeIreDome by fellow Stamford Bridge academy graduates and Young Lions Izzy Brown and Dom Solanke, so he is not the only one hoping to benefit from a spell in the Eredivisie.

And the Luton-born playmaker is hoping that if he can impress in Arnhem then his opportunities to stake a claim in the Chelsea first-team will be significantly increased.

"I have got to give my best here every day in training and in every game, give 100 per cent with a view to going back to Chelsea an improved player," he explained.

"Even if not next season, hopefully I will carry on going on until I can knock on that door and try and get into that first-team."

However, the chances of progressing in Europe look slim for Vitesse after they were beaten 3-0 in the first leg of their tie with Southampton at St. Mary’s.

But Baker and his new team-mates are confident that they can still turn it around if they are more clinical in front of goal.

"Southampton finished the chances they had and hopefully we can do the same," added Baker, who has played with Saints trio James Ward-Prowse, Harrison Reed and Matt Targett in the England youth set-up.

"Nobody has any doubt we can get something from the game and hopefully the fans can give the same support and we can get something from the game."
