League Cup draw made as road to Wembley begins

Manchester City were last season's League Cup winners

The Capital One Cup returns in the second week of August with seventy teams entering at the first round stage, all dreaming of a trip to Wembley.

Ironically two of the first round ties see teams who enjoyed a day out at the national stadium toward the end of last season face each other.

Wigan Athletic were beaten FA Cup semi-finalists back in April while Burton Albion suffered defeat in the League Two Play-Off Final in May and the two face each other at the Pirelli Stadium as they go in search of happier memories of Wembley this term.

Conversely Burton’s conquerors Fleetwood Town have very happy memories of Wembley as do Rotherham United who won the League One Play-Off Final and the two meet at the New York Stadium.

Cambridge United are back in the Football League for the first time in 9 years following their win over Gateshead in last season’s Conference Play-Off Final.

That was the second of two Wembley wins the U’s enjoyed last season but if they are to make it a hat-trick with victory in the Capital One Cup they will first have to overcome Birmingham City at St Andrew’s.
