England manager Roy Hodgson says he will leave it until 24 hours before the World Cup opener against Italy to make a final call on Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s fitness.

The Arsenal attacking midfielder is working hard to recover from a knee injury sustained in the Miami friendly against Ecuador.

Hodgson, talking ahead of England’s final match ahead of the finals, against Honduras, said: “There’s no change with Alex - he’s been working with the physios very hard and we will monitor the situation.

“We will keep our fingers crossed he will recover in time to take part in the World Cup. We will decide at the very last moment which will be 24 hours before we play our first game.

“Alex and the physios are working very hard, so let’s hope it’s not too serious and it will not be a question of him leaving us and being replaced.

“We have spent so much time discussing this squad it will not be difficult to come up with the solution if we need to replace him but that time has not come yet.

“His mood is positive and we are positive about him too.”
