England keeper Ben Foster has spoken of his pride at being part of the squad travelling to the World Cup this summer – and cannot wait for the tournament to get under way.

Foster, 31, is preparing for the showpiece event in South America and says he owes a great deal to manager Roy Hodgson for naming him in the final 23.

The West Brom keeper took a break from international football back in 2011 but knew the time was right to make a return to the England set-up.

Foster said: “This is my first major tournament and it is incredible. I am 31 and it might be my last World Cup so I am over the moon. When I got the text message it was pride more than anything.

“The reason I took a break from it was I had two very young children and it was a huge wrench being away from them.

“Whenever I was away I just wanted to be back home with the kids and family. It was a bold decision. I stick by it.

“Roy is fantastic and is a people’s person. He gets footballers. We are not just machines and have a personal life with our family.”

The England players witnessed a major storm in Miami before their first training session on Monday, but Foster says it never affected their preparations ahead of the first friendly against Ecuador on Wednesday.

“The weather is perfect. The humidity is the main thing and it is pretty identical to what we will face in Brazil”

Foster added:  “We had a bit of a storm before we went out. It was always going to be a light session. The goalies managed to do a bit.

“It was mostly gym work and the lads have got their own personal program of what they are going to do.

“It is perfect. The humidity is the main thing and it is pretty identical to what we will face in Brazil.”
