Tom Carroll’s midfield ability fitted perfectly into Gareth Southgate’s England Under-21s line-up during 2014.

With his game intelligence, movement and touch often putting him a few steps ahead of opponents, the 22-year-old was a joy to watch with the Three Lions at times.

And his importance to the team was illustrated during the final European Championship qualifier in Moldova in September when he was handed the captain’s armband in the absence of regular skipper Jack Butland.

He went on to put in a masterclass performance in the 3-0 victory, before helping the Three Lions to a memorable play-off victory over Croatia to secure their place in next summer’s Finals in Czech Republic.

After starting the year on loan with Queens Park Rangers, Watford-born Carroll ends 2014 with Swansea City where he is enjoying regular top-flight football.
