AFC Stoneham took on Cockfosters in the Isuzu FA Vase at Wembley on Non-League Finals Day 2026

We were saddened to learn of the passing of AFC Stoneham president Geoff Smith, just one day after his club won the Isuzu FA Vase at Wembley Stadium.

Geoff was due to attend the Final against Cockfosters before he was taken ill on the morning of the game on Sunday 17 May before passing away the following day.

Geoff was widely regarded as the heart and soul of AFC Stoneham with his connection to the club spanning almost six decades, during which time he has served in virtually every role imaginable – from player to manager, secretary to chairman and president.

Quite simply, there was no part of the club’s journey that Geoff had not influenced.

From the club’s early days in the lower divisions to its current ambitions, Geoff helped shape both its direction and its identity. He has played a central role in key milestones, including cup success and progression through the football pyramid, while also guiding the club through more difficult periods such as the loss of its home ground and relocation to the new one.

Beyond the results on the pitch, Geoff embodied the values that define AFC Stoneham. His commitment, humility and sense of responsibility helped create a culture built on respect and doing things the right way. He led by example, whether making strategic decisions behind the scenes or welcoming supporters at the gate on matchdays.

Perhaps most importantly, Geoff understood the club’s role within its community. He helped ensure AFC Stoneham is not just a football club, but a place where people can belong, develop and grow. Generations of players and volunteers have benefited from his guidance and dedication.

In an era where non-League football often relies on a handful of committed individuals, Geoff stood out as truly exceptional.

His impact is lasting, his influence is profound, and AFC Stoneham would simply not be the club it is today without him.

Our thoughts are with Geoff's family and friends and everyone at AFC Stoneham.

FA Chair, Debbie Hewitt MBE, said “We all felt a deep sense of shock and sadness at the news of Geoff's passing. It will leave an unimaginable gap in the lives of his family and after 60 years of loyal service it will be such a loss to the club too.

"We have great admiration for all that he has done for football over the years and know that he leaves behind a tremendous legacy at AFC Stoneham, encapsulated when we saw them lift the FA Vase at Wembley.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends and all of the fans of the club who are in deep mourning at their loss. "
