Liverpool had started the brighter of the two sides and Dominik Szoboszlai saw a shot blocked before Hugo Ekitike rolled an effort wide.

Mohamed Salah, playing his first match since it was announced he will be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season, then screwed a shot well wide when well placed having brushed off the attentions of a defender as the visitors continued to threaten.

Rayan Cherki saw a toe poke saved at the other end before Ekitike fired a snapshot over when the ball broke kindly to him on the edge of the box.

Liverpool paid for their missed opportunities as City showcased their ruthless edge in the closing stages of the first half.

Haaland slotted home the opener from the spot after Nico O’Reilly was fouled by Virgil van Dijk and the Norwegian doubled the lead in first-half injury time, heading home Semenyo’s cross.

The hosts picked up where they left off after the break and Semenyo made it three in the 50th minute, latching on to Cherki’s pass and finishing confidently past Giorgi Mamardashvili.

Salah came close to reducing the arrears but James Trafford was equal to his effort, while a confident Semenyo tried an audacious effort from the halfway line which landed on the roof of the net.

A confident City scored their fourth before the hour mark when O’Reilly’s cutback found Haaland, who converted via the underside of the bar to complete a remarkable 28th career treble.

The Blues named a strong team and took the lead after just over a minute, Jorrel Hato drilling into the net after Port Vale failed to clear a corner.

Vale responded well and came close when Rhys Walters’ misdirected shot just evaded Ben Waine at the back post, but Chelsea doubled their advantage in the 25th minute when Pedro Neto found Joao Pedro, who took his time and picked out the corner from close range.

Cole Palmer added a third before the break, poking home the rebound after Malo Gusto’s low shot was palmed into his path.

Estevao was inches away from a fourth shortly after the restart, hitting the post, but the eight-time competition winners did not have to wait long for it to arrive as Tosin Adarabioyo planted a header into the bottom corner from Gusto’s cross.

Andrey Santos headed in the fifth before Estevao, who had earlier struck the woodwork for a second time, tapped in number six after Alejandro Garnacho’s shot had come back off the post.

Garnacho rounded off the scoring from the spot in stoppage time after being brought down by Tyler Magloire.
