Earlier this year, St. George’s Park completed an infrastructure project that delivered a number of significant developments to pitches 8 and 9, known as the ‘Alan Shearer Pitch’ and the ‘Michael Owen Pitch’ respectively.
The scope of work included the addition of floodlights, pitch perimeter fencing, ball stop nets, a pedestrian pathway around the perimeter of the pitches and permanent pitch side cameras.
In addition, improved pedestrian access to the pitches was installed in the form of a new footpath and steps, while there was also the addition of synthetic goal storage at the end of pitch 8, enhanced landscaping and improvements to the existing pitch irrigation system.
The project is part of a larger strategy to create an FA Development Team and Education area utilising pitches 8, 9, 10 and 11. This will provide a purpose-fit facility that is secure, safe and functional to help develop FA teams, players and coaches.
The facility’s improvements are clear to see and Jeremy Sauvan, International Project Manager at Olympique de Marseille, had this to say about St. George’s Park upon completion of the team’s stay during our pre-season camp this summer:
“SGP's infrastructures and pitches are exceptional. Our first team trained there up to twice a day last summer. The high-quality fields are close to the hotel and managed by dedicated and flexible teams, which allows staff and players to focus on the game.”
