Tyrone Mings reflects on his England debut, a big win but also scenes off the pitch

Tyrone Mings made his England debut in Monday's game in Sofia

Tyrone Mings revealed the England squad and staff made the decision at half time to finish the job against Bulgaria in Sofia.

The Aston Villa defender was making his Three Lions debut in the game, in which England steam-rolled their hosts with a 6-0 victory.

But the story of the match was overshadowed by a series of incidents in the first half, with racist abuse directed towards the England team from areas of the home support.

Mings was one of the first to hear the abuse, just prior to the first delay in the game once it had been reported to the match officials.

And with a second stoppage shortly after, following UEFA’s official protocol for racist abuse during a game, there was a chance the game could be abandoned.

“It was quite clear to hear on the pitch but we showed a great response and we showed a great togetherness and ultimately we let the football do the talking,” said Mings.

“Hopefully, the higher powers will deal with the incidents, but we couldn’t do much more than what we did on the pitch.

“It was a great occasion to make my England debut, a great win, but overshadowed by a few disappointing chants.

“We were delighted with the result in the end though.”

Mings and his team-mates clocked up six goals in Sofia

With regards what was said in the dressing room at the break, with England already four goals clear, was all regarding the situation.

And Mings explained: “We made a decision at half time to come out and play the game, which we thought was the right decision.

“And if anything else would’ve happened, we’d have taken the appropriate action.

“Everybody was consulted, management, staff and players and we all made the decision we were happy to come back out and play the game.

“Absolutely, there was less on the pitch after that, whether members of the crowd were removed, but the protocol and correct steps were carried out.”
