England and Spurs man Danny Rose recalls his World Cup memories ahead of Russia 2018

The Tottenham Hotspur and Three Lions full-back recalls his first and favourite World Cup memories

Danny Rose is preparing for his first World Cup with the England squad at St. George's Park

1998 is my main memory of the World Cup, that game against Argentina with the Michael Owen goal and the David Beckham red card.

I was eight at the time so it was when I was first falling in love with the game and then I remember 2002 four years later, when Beckham scored the penalty against Argentina to beat them.

In particular, I remember the Ronaldinho goal past David Seaman in that World Cup, as we were allowed to watch that one in school because it was an early morning kick-off.

2010 in South Africa wasn’t great and for the last one in 2014 in Brazil, I remember watching the games when I was on holiday with my family.

Hopefully, we can go out to Russia and do a lot better than we have done in those last two.

The gaffer is trying to remind us of the fact that it’s been five major tournaments since England have won a knock-out game, people need to remember that.

We want to go as far as we can, but it’s a steady progress and we’re working hard to make sure we can improve on the previous two World Cups.

The Three Lions have two matches before they head to Russia, against Nigeria at Wembley on Saturday 2 June and then Costa Rica in Leeds on Thursday 6 June.
