Michael Owen's goal against Argentina left a lasting impression on Gary Cahill

Gary Cahill made his England debut in 2010

Whenever I think of the World Cup the first thing that always springs to mind is Michael Owen’s goal against Argentina in 1998.

It’s a goal that still stands out for me. The way he picked up the ball, broke out, kept on running and slotted it in. My first reaction was ‘wow’. It was an amazing goal.

That was certainly one of my favourite World Cup memories because you’re talking about something that had a big impact on me as a kid, as I’m sure it did for a lot of people around my age.

Another huge moment for me was David Beckham’s free-kick against Greece in 2001. I know it wasn’t in the World Cup itself, but it was the goal that got us to the World Cup so it was obviously massively important.

I’ve been lucky enough to have played in a World Cup already, although 2014 didn’t exactly go to plan so I’m excited to get going again.

There’s a long build-up before the first group game but it gives us time to build a stronger bond with each other.

And now we’re in Russia this is when we get down to business properly.
