Dame Heather Rabbatts to step down

Non-executive Director and Board member to leave The Football Association

Wednesday 14 Jun 2017

Dame Heather Rabbatts DBE has today announced that she will step down as non-executive Director and Board member after more than five successful years at The Football Association.

Rabbatts became The FA’s first female non-executive Director and Board member when she was appointed in 2012. She also served on The FA’s Remuneration Committee and chairs The FA Inclusion Advisory Board.

This followed an illustrious career across a number of senior positions in the public and private sector before she was appointed executive deputy chair of Millwall FC in 2006. In 2000 Rabbatts was awarded a CBE in the New Year Honours list and in 2016 received a DBE.

Rabbatts will also step down from her position as Chair of The FA Inclusion Advisory Board, a role that she has held since the IAB was formed 2014. Former professional footballer and diversity campaigner, Paul Elliott, has now been appointed as Chairman and will bring a vast amount of experience and expertise to the position.

Rabbatts confirmed her decision today, saying: “It has been a privilege to serve as the first woman of colour on the Board of The FA. We have made good progress but there is still much to be done.

“I believe with the Chairman and Paul Elliott the momentum for change will continue.

“Finally I would wish to add my heartfelt congratulations to the Under-20s World Cup win and I truly hope they will continue to fulfil their promise for the future.”

In response, The FA Chairman Greg Clarke, commented: “Heather has been an instrumental figure for The FA since joining us over five years ago and I would like to pass on my thanks and appreciation for her hard work and dedication to English football.

“Heather’s knowledge and experience over those years has been invaluable to The FA. As the first female non-executive Director and FA Board member Heather has been a real leader in the game, and a great support to myself and previous FA Chairman.

“Her impact has been significant, best displayed most recently through her support in getting the new FA Governance reforms ratified. As a result English football will be more inclusive and diverse than ever before.

“This will continue to be a priority for The FA and I am grateful that Heather has offered her continuing guidance and counsel to myself and our new IAB Chairman Paul Elliott as we look to address very important issues such as the lack of BAME coaches in the game.

“We fully understand and respect Heather’s decision and everyone at The FA joins me in wishing her all the very best in the future.”

Last month The FA Board, Council and shareholders ratified new corporate governance proposals which will make English football more inclusive, representative and progressive.

The new governance reforms will also ensure that The FA will meet and comply with Sport England’s Code for Sports Governance.

On 27 July 2017 The FA Board will reduce in size from 12 to 10 members and from the start of the 2018-19 season three members of The FA Board will be female.

The FA Nominations Committee will convene in the near future to start the process of looking for Heather Rabbatts’ successor.
