Tom Heaton and Jack Butland to share goalkeeping duties against France

Monday 12 Jun 2017

Goalkeepers Tom Heaton and Jack Butland are set to share duties between the sticks in France, manager Gareth Southgate has revealed.

Joe Hart started England’s 2-2 draw with Scotland on Saturday and Southgate made clear the 30-year-old would not feature at the Stade de France.

Heaton, who has won two caps, will start the match, with the intention for Butland to win his fifth senior cap in the second 45 minutes.

“It was never my intention to play Joe [Hart] against France, Tom Heaton will start the game and Jack Butland will play the second half,” Southgate confirmed.

“Tom’s had an outstanding season. We’ve got to maintain the squad environment, that people feel involved, you need to give players opportunity and game time.

“In the past one or two goalkeepers have given up international football because they’ve not had that chance, so I’m conscious of keeping people involved.

“Jack is coming back from a long lay-off. He was our number two before that. We think he can challenge for the number one slot moving forward.

“We’ve got good competition for places and it’s a great opportunity to look at people.

“It’s a difficult call on Fraser [Forster] who is also a very good goalkeeper. But with those four, and Jordan Pickford, and a couple of lads potentially coming up from the Championship next year we’re healthy – like in all positions we want competition for places.”

Harry Kane was named captain for Saturday’s World Cup qualifier at Hampden Park.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker will retain the armband against France, but Southgate insists no decision has been made on who will captain his team on a more permanent basis going forwards.

“Harry will captain the team. It makes sense to keep it as it is,” Southgate added.

“I’m not committing to a timescale on appointing a permanent captain.

“It’s been good to develop other leaders. We’re seeing that not only in terms of responsibility, but the way the team are prepared to contribute when we’re discussing and reviewing games.

“There are lots of potential leaders in different ways. Some are at the forefront, and speak first. Others are more thoughtful, take responsibility on the ball and take leadership in other ways.

“Everybody is different.”

In tribute to the victims of the recent terror attacks in England the words of our national anthem ‘God Save the Queen’ will be displayed on the big screens inside the Stade de France, with the home fans encourage to sing along, as English fans did to ‘La Marseillaise’ when France visited Wembley in November 2015, a short time after a series of attacks in Paris in which 130 people were killed.

The band of the Republic Guard will also perform Oasis song ‘Don’t Look Back in Anger’, adopted by the people of Manchester as an anthem of unity.

“I was at the match at Wembley and that was a very special occasion,” added Southgate.

“We are very grateful to the French for offering us this tribute.

“It’s nice that the history between us on the football pitch doesn’t come between us at these moments.”
