Eastleigh knock out Swindon in The Emirates FA Cup

Tuesday 15 Nov 2016
Eastleigh produced the upset of the night in The Emirates FA Cup first round replays, as the National League side saw off League One Swindon 3-0 away from home.

Jai Reason saw an early effort blocked as the 788 travelling Spitfires fans roared their side on, and they had to wait just 15 minutes for the number 10 to give Eastleigh the lead.

He exchanged a neat one-two with Scott Wilson inside the area before firing towards the goal and seeing his shot deflect in off the outstretched leg of a Town defender.

The Boys in Blue then doubled their lead on 34 minutes after a brilliant breakaway, with Andy Drury latching on to Mikael Mandron’s through ball, before shifting it on to his left foot and dinking it over Swindon keeper Lawrence Vigouroux.

And if the Eastleigh fans could not believe their luck at 2-0, they were in dreamland when Mandron made it three from the spot after Wilson was felled with a quarter of an hour remaining.

Nathan Delfouneso capitalised on a mistake from Eastleigh keeper Ryan Clarke to give Swindon some hope with ten minutes to play, but that proved to be no more than a consolation as it finished 3-1.

Elsewhere, eighth tier Taunton Town came so close to another memorable upset at Barrow, but fell just short as their long Emirates FA Cup journey came to an end in a 2-1 defeat.

In a first-half that Barrow dominated the Peacocks somehow held on, and with the score at 0-0 anything was possible in the second period.
Jordan Williams however struck the opening blow just three minutes after the interval, curling a great effort out of the keeper’s reach and into the top corner.

And while Taunton – whose fans travelled for nine hours to get to Cumbria – were in ecstasy when Ed Palmer's curling free-kick found the top corner, but that only lasted a matter of seconds as Ryan Yates immediately restored Barrow's lead.

It looked like there could be three more potential shocks on the cards as Southport, Alfreton and Solihull Moors all took Fleetwood, Newport County and Yeovil Town to extra time.

Southport however had a nightmare first ten extra minutes and Cian Bolger, Ashley Hunter, and Amari'i Bell all found the net for the Trawlermen to make it 4-1.

And it was the same scoreline in Newport as Jordan Green bundled in a corner at the back post before Josh Sheehan and Jazzi Barnum-Bobb ensured that County were not going to be Alfreton’s latest victims.

But Solihull Moors did continue their FA Cup fairytale as they recovered from going a goal down in extra time to win 4-2 on penalties.

Francois Zoko finally put Yeovil ahead in the 93rd minute, but Akwasi Asante showed nerves of steel to convert a penalty just three minutes after coming on as a substitute, before Omari Sterling-James nailed the decisive kick in the shootout.

Crawley Town twice came from behind to level at Bristol Rovers in the second half, but Rory Gaffney and Matty Taylor both scored their second goals of the game in extra time to make it 4-2.

Meanwhile, Wimbledon turned on the class to beat Bury 5-0 at home – with Dominic Poleon chipping in with two goals – and goals from Danny Wright, Jack Barthram, Billy Waters and Dan Holman saw Cheltenham Town run riot at Crewe Alexandra and win 4-1.

And Coventry, Notts County, and Rochdale all saw off lower-league opposition in Morecambe, Boreham Wood and Maidstone United to book their spots in the second round.
