England defender Chris Smalling notched his first Champions League goal in almost two years as Manchester United came from behind to defeat VFL Wolfsburg 2-1 at Old Trafford.
Without the injured Michael Carrick, the Red Devils fell behind on four minutes when Daniel Caligiuri opened the scoring.
But Juan Mata equalised from the penalty spot before half-time and, after the break, Smalling blasted in his first European goal since netting against another German side, Bayer Leverkusen, in November 2013.

Phil Jones continued his comeback from the calf injury that kept him out of the first nine games of the season, as he was introduced from the bench in the final 20 minutes.
Smalling said: “We started sloppy with that goal and then it’s a big battle. But afterwards we created lots of chances and we deserved our victory.
“We didn’t give them too many chances, except in the last 10 minutes when they kept pushing for that goal. But I think we deserved the victory in the end.”
Heroics from goalkeeper Three Lions keeper Joe Hart helped Manchester City also come from behind in their Champions League group stage clash, beating Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1.
Hart dived low to his right to make a magnificent save from Raffael’s firmly-struck penalty midway through the first half.
And though City were caught on the hop on 53 minutes when Lars Stindl struck, defender Nicolas Otamendi levelled before Sergio Aguero scored from the penalty spot in the 90th minute to ensure they would return to Manchester with maximum points.
Hart said: “We have a lot of got analysts at our club. No stone is left unturned. I have seen a lot of penalties, so I was ready for that.
“We didn’t play well. We were disjointed, as we have been in Premier League games recently. But I still think we deserved to win, we had a lot of good chances.”
