Joe Cole believes the country's top scorer Adam Armstrong has the potential to score goals for many years to come.

The attacking midfielder made his Coventry City debut on Tuesday after joining the club last month on loan from Aston Villa, netting a free-kick in the Sky Blues’ 4-3 win over Barnsley.

Despite his match winning strike, the 56-times capped former Three Lions international was outdone by his young team-mate Armstrong, an Under-19s England man himself.

The Newcastle loanee bagged twice in the victory, his second brace in four days, to become the country’s top scorer with a tally of 12 for the season in 14 games.

And the 18-year-old’s performance created a positive impression.

"Armstrong reminds me of [Sergio] Aguero in a way, he's of the build and he's hungry for goals,” Cole told CCFC.co.uk.

“In a lovely way he's selfish for goals and has the ingredients to be a top player and go on to score many more goals.”

Cole, who has won the Premier League and FA Cup on three occasions during a career that includes stints at West Ham, Chelsea, Liverpool and Lille, says he is hoping to pass on some of his knowledge to his junior colleague.

"I've come here to help the team and I'm excited to play with young players and help them develop on and off the pitch.”

Another Young Lions international prospering on loan spell at the Ricoh Arena is Ryan Kent.

The winger, whose parent club is Liverpool, was also on the scoresheet on Tuesday with his first goal in professional football.

"It was a great feeling and a great moment for myself," Kent, who turns 19 later this month, said.

"Since I have been here at Coventry that’s something I have needed to add to my game, I have had quite a few chances to score and it finally came.

"As soon as it left my foot I knew it was a goal. I shaped it well and I was happy to see it in the back of the net."

Kent, who was named in Keith Downing’s England U20s squad to face France next week, added: "It was a great decision to come to a club like Coventry, with the background the club has of playing attacking football, it suited me.

“Since I have been here, I am really enjoying myself. I think the fanbase is great here. We started the season well and are playing good football.”
