Sheffield FC celebrate winning The FA WPL Championship play-off

Sheffield FC’s promotion into FA Women’s Super League (FA WSL) 2 has been confirmed after the club met off-field licencing requirements.

Sheffield beat Portsmouth 1-0 in The FA Women’s Premier League (WPL) Championship play-off to secure their promotion.

They topped The FA WPL Northern Division to guarantee their place in the play-off.

The club have now met all on and off-pitch licencing requirements and will become the first FA WPL side to be promoted into FA WSL 2.

Sheffield FC will compete in FA WSL 2 for the 2015-16 season, which will start in spring 2015, but will join The FA WSL Development League from September.

The FA WSL is in a mid-season break because of the FIFA Women’s World Cup in Canada. England face Colombia in Montreal on Wednesday as they look to secure their place in the knockout stages.

FA head of women’s leagues and competitions Katie Brazier said: “We're absolutely delighted for Sheffield FC.

"Not only have they proved themselves on the pitch, but the club have worked really hard to ensure they are ready for the challenges of The FA WSL from the administration side too.”

The FA WSL returns on Saturday 11 July. Full fixture and ticket details can be found at www.fawsl.com.
