Bridport into double figures as FA Vase qualifying concludes

Saturday 04 Oct 2014

Warren Biyearly scored four goals as Bridport stormed through to the First Round Proper of The FA Vase with an 11-0 victory over East Cowes Victoria.

East Cowes had travelled over from the Isle of Wight for the Second Round Qualifying clash, but they left with their tails between their legs after being soundly beaten by the hosts.

Ryand Dovell put Bridport ahead early on from the penalty spot and it provided to be the first of many for the Western League Premier Division side.

In the end, Biyearly claimed the match ball after smashing four goals but he was aided by braces from Shane Evans and Tom Richardson in an impressive win for the West Dorset club.

There were plenty of goals throughout Saturday’s ties with Melksham Town also booking a place in the next round after a comprehensive win.

The south coast side ran out 8-1 winners over Bournemouth FC, thanks largely to the five goals scored by striker Gary Higdon.

Melksham’s top scorer clearly had his shooting boots on during the FA Vase clash, as he netted a deserved hat-trick after just 48 minutes.

That put the Western League Premier Division side 5-1 up and they continued to increase their advantage right up until the final whistle.

Higdon fired home two more goals, while Dan Griffiths, Ash Barnett and Leigh Rogers helped complete the rout.

Although Bridport and Melksham may have enjoyed big wins, there were some incredibly tight games during a packed fixture list.

AFC Darwen were one team who showed just how unpredictable the FA Vase can be, as they came from 2-0 down and then 3-2 down to topple Washington FC.

Despite being the visitors, Washington started the match on the front foot and their dominance saw them head into half-time two goals to the good.

But, unnerved by the deficit, Darwen fought back in the second 45 minutes to produce remarkable comeback which sees them progressed to the next round after a 4-3 victory.
