Wayne Rooney says England always expected to win despite having to come back from a goal down to defeat Slovenia.

The Three Lions captain marked his 100th appearance for his country with a goal which brought England back on level terms, and then Danny Welbeck bagged a brace to make it 3-1.

Rooney admits that the visitors caused England problems but was happy with the way his side fought back.

"We've got a good winning mentality. I think you've seen that once we went 1-0 down,” he told ITV1.

“We knew it was going to be tough night, even tougher after they scored but the character we've shown was great.

"It was though because they took the lead and we had to show our character and I think that will be good for us as a team.

"Since the World Cup we haven't faced that.

“Going behind it was a great reaction from the players and we're delighted with that.

"We could have done better before they went 1-0 up and I think after that, that really woke us up and we went and showed what a good team we are."

Rooney was presented with his 100th cap by Manchester United and England legend Sir Bobby Charlton before the match, and said it was a moment he will treasure.

"It's a great honour to represent England 100 times now and hopefully many more to come.”

Rooney was also full of praise for fellow striker Welbeck who made it five goals in his past four matches.

"He doesn't have to prove [anything] to anyone. He's shown he's a top forward and he's getting better. The more games he plays he's getting better,” he said.

"He's scoring goals for England, for Arsenal and he deserves all the credit he gets because he's a fantastic football player."
