Harry Kane is hoping to put the perfect finishing touch to his season with England Under-21s in May, as he prepares to face both Wales and the Toulon Tournament this month.

The Tottenham Hotspur striker ended the campaign on a high after scoring his first Premier League goal, what he describes as "the proudest moment" of his career to date, and making his first Premier League start so he’s reported for international duty in good form and full of confidence.

And after a season which also saw him score a hat-trick for the Under-21s on the international front, he’s glad to be back with the Three Lions to end the term in what is something of a new-look squad under Gareth Southgate.

"It’s been good so far, all of the lads look sharp and it’s been great to get everyone involved," he said.

"Some of them [the new call-ups] haven’t been involved before but it’s been looking good and we’re looking forward to the game on Monday now.

"They’re all top players and everyone has fitted in perfectly. The training has been great and they’re getting used to the way we play and we are looking forward to both Monday and Toulon after that."

Kane, 20, is one of the more experienced players in the group having picked up caps and scored goals at U17, U19 and U20 level in recent years.

And having seen former U20 team-mates such as Ross Barkley, John Stones and Jon Flanagan in contention for the senior World Cup in Brazil this summer, he knows that catching the eye with the Under-21s can put anyone in contention.

"A few of the lads have gone up to the seniors, which is what every player wants to do," he told TheFA.com.

"The competition is hot, so you have to bring your game and the training over the last couple of days has shown that - everyone’s on it and wants to impress.

"You want to be playing at the highest level that you possibly can and playing for a top club like Spurs is great.

"You’re playing in one of the top leagues in the world and the rewards are there - Barkley, Stones and Flanagan were at the U20s World Cup last year, so it shows what can happen."

First up for the Three Lions is a Euro qualifier with Wales at Swansea City’s Liberty Stadium on Monday night.

Kane was part of the squad when the nations last met in March – a narrow 1-0 win in Derby – and he remembers how tough it proved to get the three points on that occasion.

And the former Leyton Orient, Millwall and Leicester City loanee is not expecting anything different when England cross the border for this match.

"They made it tough for us last time," he added.

"We won 1-0, but they caught us on the counter a couple of times so we need to be wary of that.

"But if we play to the capability that we know we have then we want to get a result on Monday."
