New Liverpool Ladies signing Lucy Staniforth could miss the entire FA WSL season after suffering a second cruciate ligament injury inside a year.

The 21-year-old fell awkwardly towards the end of a Reds training session on Tuesday.

A scan has revealed anterior cruciate ligament damage – though it is the opposite leg that she injured when still with Bristol Academy last season.

Liverpool boss Matt Beard said: "We are absolutely devastated for Lucy that she has suffered another cruciate ligament injury.

"Lucy will receive the full support of everyone at Liverpool during this difficult time for her.

"She remains a key part of my plans for the future and I have no doubt that she will return a better and stronger player."

Liverpool get the defence of their WSL crown under way against Manchester City on Thursday 17 April, a game you can watch live on BT Sport.
