Player of the year contender: Jamaal Lascelles

It was something of an England Under-21s breakthrough year for Jamaal Lascelles in 2014, with the Nottingham Forest defender making his debut at this level.

Having previously won caps for the Three Lions at U18s, U19s and U20 level, he was first brought into the squad by head coach Gareth Southgate in the early part of the year and quickly became a popular member of the group.

He featured in the Toulon Tournament under Southgate as an U20s player during the summer and then made his debut by starting the final group qualifying game in Moldova in September when he performed well in a 3-1 win.

And he finished the year with his second cap in the 3-2 reverse against France in Brest in November.

Domestically, Lascelles' form with hometown club Forest saw him earn a big-money move to Newcastle United in the summer, before he was loaned back to the City Ground club for the 2014-15 season.
