Smalling featured in the Wembley friendlies against Denmark and Peru, starting against the Danes, and earned his place in the squad for the World Cup in Brazil.

He started the pre-World Cup fixture with Ecuador in Miami and was handed his Finals bow as he helped England to keep a clean sheet against the Costa Ricans in Belo Horizonte.

Injury kept him out of the first four internationals of the new season but he returned as a substitute for Phil Jagielka in the European Qualifier with Slovenia at Wembley in October.

He impressed enough to be chosen to start against the Scots at Celtic Park three days later. By December his club had moved into the Champions League places after a difficult start to the season.
