England Player of 2014 contender: Joe Hart

Joe Hart kept seven clean sheets for England in 2014

Joe Hart was one of three keepers to represent England in 2014, but is firmly established at Roy Hodgson's number one.

The Manchester City man figured ten times during the last 12 months and kept seven clean sheets. He conceded just five goals in a year that ended on a high.

At 27-years-old, Hart is beginning to take more responsibility for his country - particularly since the retirement of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard. Following England's exit from the World Cup, he and Wayne Rooney spoke to the media about their bitter disappointment.

Hart said: "It is a strange empty feeling. I've put everything into this tournament. But it is cruel, it is really gutting for me."

Like the rest of his team-mates though, he responded in perfect fashion as the Three Lions finished 2014 six points clear at the top of their European Qualifying table.

And in their four group games so far, he's only picked the ball out of his net once, when Jordan Henderson glanced in to score an own-goal against Slovenia.

Fast-approaching his half-century of caps - he's just two games away - Hart would no doubt love to replicate his club success at international level.

With City, he claimed his second Premier League title last season as well as a League Cup winners' medal.
