Northampton Town's Danny Emerton (No.19) celebrates his goal against Bishop's Stortford in The FA Cup

Northampton were made to fight all the way by Bishop's Stortford to book their place in The FA Cup Second Round.

Goals from Danny Emerton and Luke Norris helped The Cobblers come away with a 2-1 win at the non-League outfit.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side knew they were going to face a tough encounter and that proved to be the case as the Conference South team almost created a major shock in front of the ITV cameras.

Stortford came into the game brimming with confidence having won the last seven games and knew they were facing a Northampton side who had recorded just one win in their last 14.

Both teams hit the woodwork in the first half as Kane Ferdinand headed against the post for Northampton while Sean Francis hit the bar for the non-Leaguers.

The deadlock was finally broken on 62 minutes as Emerton put Northampton into the lead when Blyth flicked the ball into his path and he cut in from the left to hit a 20-yard effort into the back of the net.

Northampton doubled their lead on 68 minutes. Chris Hackett saw his shot blocked and Norris was in the right place to strike the ball home.

Bishop’s Stortford refused to lie down and Reece Prestedge gave his side a major lift when he pulled a goal back for the home side on 81 minutes, converting from close-range.

The non-League team tried everything as they looked to grab an equaliser but Northampton held on to book their place in the next round of the competition.
