England winger Rachel Yankey has been awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours.

The Arsenal star, who received an MBE in 2005, collects her latest award for services to the women’s game.

It comes at the end of a good year for the 34-year-old, who became England's most-capped player in June before chalking up her 129th appearance a month later.

At club level she also helped the Gunners to an FA Cup and Continental Cup double.

“This very special award means a great deal to me, and I’m incredibly proud to have my work on and off the pitch recognised in this way," she told Arsenal’s website.

“I have to say I owe Arsenal a great deal, for kick-starting my coaching and playing career. I started out as an Arsenal in the Community trainee, which is where my love of coaching and working with children began.

"As an Arsenal Ladies player, I have been lucky enough to play with some of the best players in the country and helped contribute to the Club’s unbelievable history."

Also on the New Year's Honours list was former FA Chairman David Bernstein, who becomes a CBE

Bernstein, ex-chairman at Manchester City, was at The FA from 2010 until July this year when he was replaced by Greg Dyke.

"I am of course delighted with this award, it is a reflection of the great positives that football contributes and the fine work and support provided by the team at The FA," said Bernstein, who helped launch The FA’s 150th anniversary celebrations in January.

"I think this honour relates to all my 20 years in football and I am really delighted.

"I had ten years at Manchester City and it was a fantastic period to be involved at a key moment in its history, getting the club back on its feet and organising the deal for the new stadium.

"It was then enormously satisfying to be involved with Wembley through its construction phase to see it become the greatest stadium in the world."

Chair of The FA's Women's Committee, Sue Hough, was also named in the Honours list, receiving an MBE for services to both Women's Football and Disability Football.

Other people to be honoured from the world of football include Roger Lewis Harold Merton, for services to London Youth, football and the community in Hertfordshire and Jason Morgan, chief executive of the Charlton Athletic Community Trust for services to Football in the community.

There was also an honour for West Ham United vice-chairman Karren Brady, who has been made CBE for services to entrepreneurship and women in business.
