FOREST FIRE THEIR WAY TO TITLE - BUT NOT PROMOTION

Sharp-shooting Nottingham Forest won a three-horse race for the 2022-23 Northern Premier Division title, pipping Wolverhampton Wanderers on goal difference and third-placed Burnley by two points.

But when it then came to the promotion play-off against Southern Division winners Watford, they could not find the goals to beat the team they had triumphed over a month earlier in the League Cup final.

Hitting the net was rarely a problem for Andy Cook’s team in the league season. They never went through a game without scoring at least once and, crucially, when it came to the final table it was massive wins of 12-1 against Fylde and 10-1 against Boldmere St Michaels that helped in producing a goal difference of 63 - 19 better than Wolves, to whom ironically they suffered both of their only defeats.

It was advantage Wolves when the two teams first met, a 4-2 win away to Forest making the west midlands outfit the division’s early leaders. But a week later Wolves had their first defeat, losing at home to Burnley for the Clarets to take over at the top.

Forest eventually nudged ahead of their two title rivals in January and then held off the twin challenge to be crowned champions on the season’s last day, on which they beat Stoke City 3-0.

Speaking after what was his 99th game in charge of the team, manager Cook said: “Winning the League Cup against Watford was a great occasion on the day, but the League trophy is the one we wanted since I came into the club in 2019. That is the one that probably means the most and the most work has gone into it - it’s four seasons’ worth of work.”

That title-clinching result came a week after the League Cup final victory over Watford, and three weeks before facing the same opponents in a meeting that would determine which of the two sides would compete in the FA Women’s Championship in the 2023-24 season.

As he prepared his team for the vital clash, Cook said: “I could not be more pleased with where we are right now. Watford will be out for revenge after the League Cup final, but we know what we need to do and have to focus on ourselves.”

After their goalscoring prowess had been paramount to Forest’s successful League and League Cup campaigns, they were sadly unable to find their shooting boots on this most important of occasions.

Instead it was Watford’s Poppy Wilson who produced the defining moment of the play-off, heading home a 17th minute Gemma Davison cross for the only goal of the game.

Forest gave it their all and went close to equalising on several occasions, the first of them through a 22nd minute Sophie Domingo shot that was well saved by Watford goalkeeper Jacqueline Goldsmid.

Either side of half-time Rebecca Anderson and Yasmin Mosby sent free-kicks narrowly wide, and then 20 minutes from time an Amy West shot flashed just past the Watford post.

That was as close as Forest got to levelling the scores, however, and as the Watford players and fans celebrated following the final whistle a disconsolate Cook said, ”We can win the league, we can win the Cup, but the feeling now - we've done all that work, done brilliantly throughout the season, but to not gain promotion it almost feels like it's worthless.

"We know it's not, but that's the raw emotion. I told the players then, you remain focused on how well you've done and I'm proud of everything they've done. We've won the League and a Cup, not many teams can win a double. We've managed to do that.”

The play-off was not only Cook’s 100th match in charge of Forest but, as it turned out, also his last. He departed the club seven weeks after the game, to be replaced in August by Carly Davies.

FAWNL NORTHERN PREMIER DIVISION UPS AND DOWNS 2022-23

Forest’s play-off failure meant that, under their new manager, they would again be battling for promotion from the FAWNL in the 2023-24 season.

The team that would most likely be their toughest opponents would be Newcastle United, promoted from Division One North and in the 2023 close season elevated to full-time professional status.

Stepping up from Division One Midlands would be champions Stourbridge, while Brighouse Town - after splitting away from the men’s club of the same name - would be playing as Halifax Town.

Stepping down from the Northern Premier would be the bottom pair of Boldmere St Michaels and Loughborough Lightning, both of them relegated to Division One Midlands.
