A Carla Ward treble helped Sheffield FC to a convincing League Cup final victory that also meant a well deserved double as they won the Premier League Northern Division with a huge 16-point gap between themselves and runners-up Fylde.
Southern Division Cardiff City, who ended the season in third place, were on the back foot from the 12th minute as captain Ward struck in the rebound after her penalty had been parried by goalkeeper Sophie Dando.
Though Cardiff hit back with a good spell of pressure in which Kelly Aldridge had a powerful shot deflected on to the crossbar, their deficit was doubled when Ward took advantage of a defensive mix-up to shoot home in the 34th minute.
A 41st minute lapse at the back by the Sheffield defence allowed City back into the game, Beth Lloyd nipping in to steal the ball and turn it into the empty net.
But seconds before half-time Suzanne Davies restored Sheffield’s two-goal advantage, ghosting in at the far post to tap in a cross from the right
And six minutes after the break the game was as good as won when Jodie Michalska turned in an Ellie Gilliatt cross for Sheffield’s fourth goal.
Any lingering doubts about which team was to collect the trophy were ended when Ward headed in her 74th minute hat-trick goal and, sixty seconds later, Lisa Giampala collected an under-hit backpass to score goal number six.
City got a late consolation goal through Lauren Townsend’s 87th minute penalty, but by then the game was totally out of the Welsh team’s reach and Sheffield were already celebrating their first major trophy triumph.
