Report about the first-ever FA Women’s Football Awards from The Times newspaper

The first-ever FA Women’s Football Awards were held on Thursday 29 April 1999 with eight awards presented. The celebratory lunch attracted the interest of the media and was so successful that it was decided to make it an annual event. 

National Division Players’ Player of the Year: Sue Smith (Tranmere Rovers)

Nationwide International Player of the Year: Sue Smith (Tranmere Rovers)

Walkers Young Player of the Year: Katie Chapman (Millwall Lionesses)

National Division Top Scorer: Marieanne Spacey (Arsenal) - 17 goals

Northern Division Top Scorer: Lucy Ward (Leeds United) - 21 goals

Southern Division Top Scorer: Angela Banks, Emma Mead (both Whitehawk) - 19 goals

The Times/On the Ball Special Achievement Award: Sylvia Gore

Umbro Most Improved Team: Southampton Saints
