LIVERPOOL’S BEST NOT GOOD ENOUGH TO SHOOT DOWN GUNNERS
It was Arsenal all the way in 1994-95, the first season under the jurisdiction of the Football Association following their takeover of the Women’s FA League during the summer of 1994 and the subsequent re-naming of the National League to the Premier League.
And what a 94-95 campaign it was, the Gunners winning every single National Division game until their final outing against Liverpool, who held the champions to a goalless draw.
That completed a good season for Liverpool, playing under the city’s name for the first time following a name-change from Knowsley United.
As Knowsley, the team had performed well in the first three seasons of the National League. They claimed fourth place in 1991-92 then had two successive third places finishes.
They stepped into the 94-95 campaign with ambitions not only in the League but also in the FA Cup, having reached the final for the first time in the previous season only to lose 1-0 to Doncaster Belles.
Sadly for the Merseysiders it was to be an FA Cup déjà vu as this time they lost to Arsenal, who claimed a National League and FA Cup double with a 3-2 win in the final at Tranmere Rovers’ Prenton Park.
It was scant consolation when Liverpool, led by Player-Manager Angela Gallimore, subsequently denied Arsenal a 100 per cent league record as the season drew to its close.
But they ended the campaign as runners-up, the club’s best finish in the top flight before the 2011 formation of the Women’s Super League.
