VILLA VICTORIOUS IN THREE-HORSE TITLE RACE
An exciting three-way tussle for the Northern Division title was won by Villa Aztecs, though in a dramatic finale to the campaign both Cowgate Kestrels and St. Helens/Garswood ended just a single point behind the champions.
The title and with it, promotion to the top flight, looked to be heading Cowgate’s way after a thrilling run of eight wins in nine unbeaten matches – including doing the double over Villa.
But after the Aztecs had ended their season leaving the Kestrels needing just two points from their final two outings – both at home – the North Eastern outfit lost to Ipswich Town and then, finally and frustratingly, to Bronte.
It was not such a disappointing end to the campaign for St. Helen’s Garswood, who when Villa finished their fixtures were 16 points behind them but with five games still to play.
With no real pressure in the circumstances – unlike Cowgate – St. Helen’s won all five games including a 10-1 hammering of bottom-but-one club Nottingham Argyle.
Villa’s victory not only took them up to the National Division for the first time but also gave them a fine consolation for losing April’s League Cup final to Wimbledon.
Meanwhile bottom club Solihull Borough, who under their previous name Abbeydale Alvechurch had finished runners-up to Arsenal in the 1991-92 Southern Division season, were relegated and were never to regain their place in the Premier League.
