GUNNERS DOUBLE UP WITH LEAGUE CUP
Arsenal 1 (Ball)
Millwall Lionesses 0
WFA National League Cup final
Alt Park, Liverpool
24 May 1992
The Gunners had reached the final in style, hammering Broadbridge Heath 12-2 in the first round before beating Reigate 2-0 in Round Two and Ipswich Town by the same scoreline in a semi-final tie played a fortnight after the end of the League season.
A further two weeks later, on 24th May at Knowsley United’s Alt Park stadium, they faced a Millwall team who had battled their way to the Cup final with close-fought victories over Wolverhampton, Wimbledon (5-4 on penalties after a goalless draw) and Davies Argyle.
Like Ipswich a top flight side, the Lionesses were to be Arsenal’s toughest opponents as they sought to lift the Cup. But a Naz Ball goal – her fourth in the four rounds of the competition – just before the half-hour proved the winner.
Manager Akers said: “It was the perfect end to the season for us. It was a difficult game against good opponents, but I felt we deserved the win and it set us up nicely to go into next season in the top division.”
