A full-back who would lead both club and country, Hughes would win all the honours available while captaining the all-conquering Liverpool team of the 1970s. Despite untold domestic success, Hughes was perhaps unfortunate to be part of a decade in which the Three Lions failed to qualify for two World Cups. A squad player in Mexico, 1970, Hughes never got on the field.
