FA Cup Fifth Round replay: Hull City 2-1 Brighton

Monday 24 Feb 2014
Hull City will take on Sunderland in the Sixth Round

A goal apiece from Curtis Davies and Robert Koren saw Hull book their place in The FA Cup quarter final with a Fifth Round replay win over Brighton.

Davies headed the Tigers ahead on 14 minutes and Koren’s deflected free-kick gave Steve Bruce’s side a two-goal lead at the break.

Leonardo Ulloa pulled a goal back for the Seagulls but Hull held on to seal a Sixth Round tie against Sunderland, one of Bruce’s former clubs.

Hull started the game the better of the two sides – and they were well worth their half-time lead.

Ahmed Elmohamady set up Matty Fryatt early on but the striker could not provide the finishing touch.

Sone Aluko forced a corner which Koren delivered deep towards Davies, who headed it back across goal and Brighton midfielder Jake Forster-Caskey was unable to keep the ball out.

There weren’t many chances in the first-half but Hull doubled their advantage when Lewis Dunk's trip on Aluko handed them an inviting free-kick.

Koren whipped a low, curling effort goalwards and a slight deflection off Stephen Ward wrong footed Peter Brezovan and the ball trickled over the line.

Brighton were much better after the break and Dunk crashed an effort against the crossbar shortly after the restart.

They deservedly pulled a goal back when Ulloa glanced David Lopez’s inswinging free-kick past Steve Harper in the Hull goal.

But Oscar Garcia’s side were unable to build on this goal and Hull will entertain the Black Cats in the last eight next month.
