England U19s and Arsenal Ladies midfielder Leah Williamson was named PFA Women’s Young Player of the Year.

The 18-year-old shot to fame earlier this month by scoring a re-taken penalty, five days after it was wrongly ruled out, that secured the Young Lions’ place at this summer’s European Championship.

She played a key role as the Gunners finished fourth in FA WSL 1 last season and came off the bench in Arsenal’s FA Women’s Cup Final success over Everton.

“I’m overwhelmed,” she told Arsenal.com. “It’s amazing to be recognised by fellow players so I’m just very humbled.

“It’s taken a lot of work since the moment I started playing football, but this is my first full season with the first team so you have to try to make an impact, make yourself known and give it everything you’ve got.”

Williamson and her U19s team-mates will travel to Israel in July to compete in the Euro Finals.

The draw takes place on 20 May.
