New England Women's Head Coach Mark Sampson has selected his first squad

Mark Sampson has named his first England Women’s squad, for January’s training camp in La Manga.

The former Bristol Academy boss was appointed Three Lions Head Coach earlier this month and he will run the rule over 30 players in the warm climes of southern Spain in the New Year.

Jemma Rose, Rachel Daly, Gilly Flaherty, Alex Greenwood, Demi Stokes and Jodie Taylor have all received their first senior team call-up, while Dunia Susi, Corinne Yorston, Gemma Davison and Lianne Sanderson return to the fold.

Sampson said: "We’ve got lots of new faces in the squad and that gives me a good opportunity to see where we are at and will help me make some decisions as we move forward.

"It is a training camp, it’s important to emphasise that. The door is fully open for every player.

"If they perform well for their club and they show that they want to play for England and do well then they’ll have a great opportunity to be involved in future squads."

The early-year camp in La Manga has become an established part of the England Women’s calendar and this year it takes on extra significance with a friendly match scheduled against Norway on Friday 17 January.

Sampson added: "All players and coaches want to play games. I’m really excited to play a game. It’s a full international but we have to be realistic as to where we are as a group at that stage.

"The important thing for me is to get to see the players in a football match. I’m delighted we’ve got the opportunity to play a game."

After La Manga, England will once again compete in the annual Cyprus Cup in March, having won the competition last year, beating Canada in the final.

And they will entertain Montenegro in April in the first World Cup qualifier of the year.
