James Wilson's 'confidence boost' for Norway trip

James Wilson and Duncan Watmore celebrate the winning goal against USA
James Wilson believes Thursday’s win over USA is the perfect boost for England Under-21s ahead of the new Euro campaign.

The Manchester United striker scored a second-half winner for the Three Lions at Deepdale, just 10 minutes after being introduced as one of nine substitutes on the hour mark.

And with Gareth Southgate’s squad only having had three days of training together in the build-up to the game, Wilson believes the result will give the group confidence ahead of their first Euro Qualifier in Norway next week.

"It’s a big confidence boost going into Norway for us," he told TheFA.com.

"For me personally with the goal, it puts me in the right frame of mind and hopefully we can go over there and get what we want.

"The lads haven’t been together that long, but we’ve gelled together as a team and got the goal just after we all came on.

"We’ve only trained together three times and had a few hard sessions now, so we’ve done quite well I think.

"I thought it was a good performance especially because it’s sometimes tough when you make so many changes as the game goes along.

"But I thought we did well, both in the first half and in the second half when the second group came on."

Wilson, who has been capped previously by England at U16, U19 and U20 level, was one of 11 debutants in the squad as Southgate’s new-look squad set out on the road to Poland 2017.

There was still a degree of familiarity in the team though, with Wilson’s goal set up for him by Sunderland winger Duncan Watmore, who was in the same U20s squad for the Toulon Tournament earlier this summer.

And after working alongside Watmore during that trip, Wilson admits he knew there was always going to be a chance in the offing once Jake Forster-Caskey’s free-kick had been slipped through for him.

"It was great play from him to square and I could tap it in from the right place," admitted Wilson.

"I’ve seen him score three or four goals now for England and Sunderland and they’ve all been similar, so you’ve got to expect from Duncan.

"He’s a great competitor and footballer though, so it’s good to play alongside him."

The U21s will now head out to Norway on Sunday, before facing their hosts in a Euro Qualifier in Drammen on Monday evening.
