Ten of the best for England CP as they hammer USA at SGP

Jack Rutter and his England team-mates were too much for USA
England booked an intriguing final Cerebral Palsy World Championships fixture against the Republic of Ireland, after a commanding 10-0 victory against USA.

The Three Lions made light work of their opponents from across the pond as Jake Brown, James Blackwell and Ollie Nugent all got braces.

And further strikes from Jack Rutter, a Matt Crossen thunderbolt, Michael Barker's penalty and an own-goal gave England their second double-figure score of the competition.

They will now take on their international neighbours on Saturday evening, as both teams bid for a top-five finish.

After falling 5-0 to world champions and tournament favourites Russia in the quarter-final, Keith Webb’s side still had plenty to play for.

The Cerebral Palsy World Championships is a positional tournament – with vital ranking points up for grabs. Not to mention a place at the Paralympics.

And with a record fifth-place finish still attainable, victory against USA was imperative – and England set out their intent from the off.

Within minutes of the start an innovative corner routine between Crossen to Rutter result in the latter’s shot only just being charged down.

Moments later the captain almost scored with an audacious back-heel, which drew sharp shrills of excitement from several members of the St. George’s Park crowd.

They did not have to wait long to cheer for real though, as seconds later the hosts were ahead. Rutter fired towards goal, goalkeeper Keith Johnson spilt the ball and Brown was at hand to pounce.

England’s second was almost a carbon copy of the first. Blackwell became the facilitator as Johnson – impressive aside from the two parries – spilt again, and again into the path of the youngster from Barrow-in-Furness.

That second goal was as inevitable as the opener. Between the two strikes they had laid siege on the USA goal. Crossen and Brown combined again on the edge of the box, and only a fine save from Johnson denied the former a specular goal.

USA were on the ropes and England continued to push forward. Crossen and Blackwell all went close soon after the opener before Brown eventually doubled the lead.

So in the ascendency were England that Harry Baker – who made his became the sole defender for large spells of the first half as Crossen was given licence to roam.

The visitors did threaten on occasions, but they were few and far between.

Giles Moore, a mere spectator in England’s first outing against Japan and their busiest player against Ukraine and Russia, saved well from Mason Abbiate long-range effort. But in truth his afternoon was a comfortable one and England ran riot in the second half. Nugent came on for Rutter, and soon got himself on the scoresheet with a brace of his own.

Crossen’s scored a contender for goal of the tournament with a thunderous strike from distance, Barker tapped home a penalty and the unfortunate David Garza could not prevent an own-goal.

England will return to the dressing room fresh and ready to face Republic of Ireland in just over 24 hours’ time.
